Moving House in 2022? How to choose your removals company

It’s often said that moving house is one of life’s most stressful events. But, let’s not forget that it can also be an exciting time. Perhaps a promotion or new job offer is the reason for your move, or maybe you’re upsizing to a superior home in West Sussex or beyond. Whatever the reason for your move, we want you to concentrate on the highs rather than get bogged down in stress. So, in this article, we thought we would offer some practical advice. Let’s start at the beginning of the moving process and explore some tips on choosing your removals company.

Are you moving house in 2022? Find your removals company.

Begin your search for a suitable removals company at least four weeks before your moving date. You’ll need to consider not just which company you use but also what service is best for you. Ideally, consider quotes from at least three reputable companies. Most removals companies will offer three options:

Full Packing Service: You won’t have to lift a finger! The removals company’s team will pack all your personal effects and safely transport them to your new home. Depending on the size of your home, the team usually arrives two to three days before your moving date, with a van full of packing materials, and your belongings get wrapped and packed around you. These teams are experts, and you will find they know to leave certain items (like the kettle!) until last.

Part Packing Service: This is sometimes referred to as a Fragile Packing Service. The removal company supplies you with all the packing materials you need to get a head-start on things. It’s ideal if you plan to have a bit of a clear out before you move. You’ll pack everything that’s non-breakable, like books, clothing and linen. Then the removal company’s team will finish the job a day or so before your moving day, packing any fragile items like pictures and ornaments, together with the contents of your kitchen.

Owner-Packed Service: This service is generally an entry-level service and, therefore, more cost-effective. But with it comes greater responsibility. The removal company supplies all the packing materials you need, but it’s your job to wrap and pack. It’s important to remember that some companies will only offer limited liability for your effects if you elect to pack them yourself.

Penfolds four top tips for choosing your removal company:

– Look for accreditations such as BAR (British Association of Removers) or PMA (Professional Movers Association).

– Check out their online reviews. Remember, most companies will only publish good reviews on their websites! So, Google and Trustpilot are good places to start.

– Find out whether they offer any additional services you may find helpful. Perhaps you need temporary storage facilities that they can provide. Some removal companies offer professional cleaning services for the home you’re moving out of or into. And it can be helpful to know this is all in hand with one service provider.

– Find out exactly what’s included with each quote and consider the costs of additional services like mover’s insurance. Your home insurance may not cover you for ‘goods in transit’, so it pays to check your cover.
